PERCY GEORGE BIRCH, Lance-Corporal, 1/4th Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, son of Mr Calvin Birch of Darlington Street, Wolverhampton, was born on October 8th 1892.  He entered the school in 1909 and left in July 1911.  From 1912 to 1914 he was at Culham Training College and gained the Board of Education Certificate and the Archbishop’s Divinity Certificate (1st Class).  Being appointed an Assistant Certificated Teacher under the Bucks County Council, he was in camp with his College Company of Territorials when war was declared, and at once volunteered.  On August 24th 1916 he was in charge of a bombing party in the Somme campaign, and whilst observing from an advanced position was struck by a piece of shell and killed instantaneously.  His commanding officer states that he met his death when cheerfully and manfully doing his duty in the very forefront of the battle.
