STEPHEN CASTLE, Public School Battalion of the Royal Fussiliers, younger son of Mr F Castle of Heath Town, was killed by a poisonous gas shell in the fight at Mametz Wood on July 16th 1916.  He was at the school from September 1910 to July 1914, entering with a Staffordshire County Scholarship and leaving to become a Student Teacher at Woden Road School, Wednesfield.  In April 1915 he enlisted and six months later went to France.  He was almost immediately ordered to the front and gave an example of cheeriness under the worst conditions, never failing in loyal response to his officers.  A genial and good-natured boy at school, entering heartily into the interests of his companions, he won general esteem later by his good humour and ready sympathy.  He w as only 19.
