EBOR ECCLESTONE, son of Mr E Ecclestone of Goldthorn Hill, Wolverhampton, came to the school in 1908 and left at Easter 1911.  He entered the service of Lloyds Bank, Wolverhampton, and joined the Bankers’ Battalion (26th) of the Royal Fusiliers in January 1916.  Early in July he was drafted to the 9th Battalion of the same regiment and at once found himself in the great Somme battle.  On August 4th, in a successful night attack on an enemy trench, he was observed to fall.  The official report was that he was wounded and missing, but some days later his body was found and buried near Ovillers.  One who knew him well says “he made the supreme sacrifice willingly”; and others bear tribute to his generous, genial and gallant nature.  We who knew him here realise how just is this testimony.
