HAROLD SAMUEL LEWIS GRIFFITHS (1892-1896 : 38),  Private in the 5th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment, was the only son of Mr Samuel Griffiths of Albert Road, Wolverhampton.  Some years after leaving school he took over the business of his father in Queen Square, Wolverhampton, to surrender it in May 1916, in response to the urgency of the national need.  He was at first in the South Staffordshire Regiment but on reaching France was transferred to the South Lancashire Regiment.  In the autumn of 1916 he was engaged in many severe actions and conducted himself with such gallantry as to receive on the field the offer of a commission.  His preference, however, was for the ranks, and he remained there.  Frostbite sent him to hospital in England from February to May 1917, but in August he was again on active service.  With General Sir Julian Byng’s army he took part in the great advance on Cambrai and on November 30th he was reported missing.  As nothing has since been heard of him, it is assumed that he fell in the course of this battle.
