JOHN KENNETH GROVES (1910-1911 : 21), Gunner, Royal Field Artillery, was the eldest son of Mr & Mrs W H Groves of Parkdale, Wolverhampton.  His wish to enter the army was so strong that when his first application was rejected because of his being below the required physical standard, he went on to a farm with the sole object of rendering himself fit.  Released from his engagement there on a certain Saturday afternoon, he was at the recruiting office at 10 am on the following Monday and was this time gratified by being placed in category B1, a classification that a few months later was changed to Grade 1.  In 1916 he joined the R.F.A., and in 1917 he was in France.  Thence he went to the help of our allies in Italy and in the Spring of this year he returned to France, to meet his death there on October 4th last.
