BASIL VICTOR BATE HEWITSON, son of Mrs Hewitson, Kinmel House, Llandudno, was at the school from January 1911 to December 1912.  He enlisted in the 1/6th Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment as soon as the declaration of war made its appeal to the young manhood of the nation.  Drafted to France in March 1915, he was soon offered a commission in the Royal Welsh Fusiliars, but the stopping of leave prevented him from obtaining it.  In the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt on October 13th 1915, he volunteered as a bomber and was reported missing, and no further information has been received.  Those who were with him have written of his cheerfulness under all conditions, his zeal for work, his readiness to help and his fearlessness.  He was only nineteen and was destined for an engineering career.
