JOHN ALFRED HINTON (1908-1912 : 20), Private 6th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, was the elder son of Mr A J Hinton of Wolverhampton.  On leaving school he entered his father’s business, and on reaching the age of 18 made several attempts to enter the army.  At length he was designated for his county regiment and placed in the 2/6 Battalion.  His training was received at Lincoln, Salisbury and Mablethorpe, which a considerable amount of active service was done in Ireland in 1916.  An attack of spotted fever prevented his going to France with his own battalion, but on January 1st 1918 he was drafted out with the 3/5 Battalion, and thereafter rejoined his unit.  On March 21st he was engaged in an action near Abbeville with the Headquarters signallers, was severely wounded, and was captured.  Taken to Hameln near Hanover, he appears to have been in hospital suffering much from dysentery until his death there on September 17th.
