GEOFFREY LINDEN HOWELL (1913-1916 : 19), Private, 14th Battalion of the London Regiment (the London Scottish), was the son of Mr H Howell of the Post Office, Ettingshall.  His early education was obtained at the Ettingshall Council School and he came here as the winner of a scholarship in 1913.  From the first he was prominent in the games.  For three seasons he played for the 1st XI in Football, making his mark as a very serviceable forward with the capacity for putting in dangerous shots.  In Cricket he also played for the school during three seasons, besides acting as Captain of the East House.  Twice he was a member of the Running VIII, and in 1916 its Champion.  He was also a member of the O.T.C.  Having enlisted in 1917, he left for France in May of this year.  He was selected for the dangerous and responsible work of a ‘runner’ and met with his death by a shell on August 23rd, his 19th birthday.  During his training his prowess in sport gained him two medals for Football and a first prize for cross-country running, and his letters home prove him to have carried into the sterner duties of war the same fine spirit that he showed in games.
