WILLIAM HERBERT NOKES (1903-1909 : 24),  Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, was the elder son of Mr & Mrs C D Nokes of Lea Road, Wolverhampton.  He was in business at Birmingham when the war began and at once enlisted.  After training at Penn Court he went to France and for two years acted as a stretcher bearer, receiving a wound in the course of his work.  In March 1917, he returned to England and, after training at Pirbright, received his commission.  Going out to France again in October,  he fell while leading his platoon into action on the 26th of that month.  “He died a most gallant death”, wrote his commanding officer in a letter to his parents.
