HORACE WHITEHOUSE (1907-1910 : 21), Private in the 1/5th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, was the son of Mr E Whitehouse of Bushbury Road, Heath Town, Wolverhampton, and while there passed the Junior Local Examinations of both Oxford and Cambridge with honours.  In 1907 he entered the school as the winner of a Town Scholarship and left after 3½ years, having reached the Lower Fifth.  When war came he abandoned his preparation for the Civil Service and at once enlisted.  In February 1915, he proceeded with his battalion to France and thereafter took part in numerous engagements, all of which he passed through unscathed; but he was killed on July 1st 1916, in the first great battle of the Somme.
