Lenin, leader of the Soviet Union, is close to death and the battle to succeed him is raging in the Politburo.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.activehistory.co.uk\/intro\/ib_stalin_rise\/\">This interactive exercise<\/a><\/strong> forms part of the\u00a0<span class=\"high\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.activehistory.co.uk\/\">ActiveHistory<\/a>\u00a0unit on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.activehistory.co.uk\/Miscellaneous\/menus\/A_Level\/Late_Modern\/Russia_and_the_USSR\/USSR_under_Stalin-RISE.htm\">Stalin&#8217;s Rise to Power<\/a><\/span>.<br \/>\nStudents take the role of five key members of the Politburo at the end of 1922.<br \/>\nThe respective power of these figures is represented by distributing a large\u00a0<span class=\"high\">bag of sweets<\/span>\u00a0between them.<br \/>\nAs events unfold, members of the audience have to consider who is gaining power, and at whose expense.<br \/>\nAt each stage, the sweets are redistributed accordingly and the computer keeps a graphic track of changing fortunes.<br \/>\n<span class=\"high\">Video clips<\/span>\u00a0from YouTube are built in at appropriate points to consolidate knowledge.<br \/>\nA printable worksheet is dynamically generated at the end of the exercise, providing\u00a0<span class=\"high\">graphics<\/span>, narrative and\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"high\">follow-up questions<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rise of Stalin: A Sweet Roleplay Exercise!
