The 1960s saw the emergence of a \u2018counterculture<\/strong>\u2019 as young people in particular rebelled against traditional values and ways of life. The\u00a0conditions<\/strong>\u00a0for the emergence of this counterculture are varied and complex, and include such things as:
Economic<\/strong>\u00a0wealth and educational opportunities gave the post-war \u2018baby boom\u2019 generation in the US an unprecedented degree of power and confidence
Music<\/strong>,\u00a0fashion<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0movie<\/strong>\u00a0industries helped foster a separate, energetic \u2018teen identity\u2019 in opposition to an older generation who simply craved peace and stability after World War Two
An emerging\u00a0drug culture<\/strong>, summed up by Timothy Leary\u2019s call for students to \u201cturn on, tune in and drop out\u201d sharpened a sense of conflict with the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
