 Events (300 years ago today): 1726 - Five men arrested during a raid on Mother Clap's molly house in London are executed at Tyburn.

 Events (100 years ago today): 1926 - Admiral Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett claim to have flown over the North Pole (later discovery of Byrd's diary appears to cast some doubt on the claim.)

 Deaths (50 years ago today): 1976 - Jens Bjørneboe, Norwegian author, poet, and playwright (born 1920)

 Deaths (50 years ago today): 1976 - Ulrike Meinhof, German militant, co-founded the Red Army Faction (born 1934)
