I take my history students to Berlin on a residential trip after they complete this preparatory task based on selected video clips. The following Google maps illustrate the division of Berlin during the Cold War, and the clear outline of the Berlin Wall (with inner/outer walls marked, and the death strip inbetween). Zoom in for details of individual sites and multimedia resources. The trip was run as a joint Humanities project: the Geographers also had a range of specialist experiences lined up which can be explored on Matt Podbury's GeographyPods website.
After the trip, students use what they have learned to complete a unit of study on Communist East Germany. This concludes with an essay on the subject "Analyse the impact of the Cold War upon one state you have studied" as part of their preparation for IB History Paper 2 Essa As a revision exercise, they will now compare and contrast this experience with that of the United States by reviewing their work on the McCarthyite Red Scare.

This walking tour took place on Monday morning. We caught a tube to Mohrenstrasse station and then walked to the other sites. We then caught a train to Sachsenhausen concentration camp for a guided tour before returning back to the hotel.

What can DNA tell us about Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings?

For more than 200 years, people have argued about whether Thomas Jefferson, one of the main writers of the Declaration of Independence, fathered children with Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman at his Virginia estate. New research has used DNA from Jefferson’s hair and samples from living descendants of both Jefferson and Hemings. Scientists recovered DNA from hair cut from Jefferson after his death in 1826. They then compared it with DNA from descendants of his known family and from descendants of Hemings’ children. The results strongly indicate that Jefferson was the father of Eston Hemings. Further testing also found convincing evidence linking Jefferson to descendants of Madison Hemings. The research does not erase the difficult history of slavery or the unequal power between Jefferson and Hemings. Instead, it gives new evidence about a relationship that was denied or questioned for generations.
Why it matters: This story connects ideas about freedom and equality with the reality of slavery in the early United States. It also shows how history can change when new evidence becomes available. The DNA research has helped descendants understand their family history, while also forcing people to look more honestly at the contradiction between Jefferson’s words and his life.

What can a hidden Maya city tell us about life in the past?

Deep in the rainforest of Belize lies Caracol, one of the largest cities built by the ancient Maya. For many years, historians imagined Maya cities as quiet religious centres with small populations living in the countryside. Research at Caracol has changed that picture. Archaeologists have found evidence of a huge city with more than 100,000 people, thousands of buildings, paved roads, reservoirs, farms and many local markets. New technology called lidar uses laser pulses to map the ground beneath the jungle canopy, revealing roads and neighbourhoods hidden by trees. Inscriptions also show that Caracol fought powerful rivals, including the famous city of Tikal. At one point, Caracol appears to have defeated Tikal and become the leading power in the region. The evidence suggests that Maya cities were busy, organised places where ordinary people traded goods and grew food as well as attending religious ceremonies.
Why it matters: The Maya are sometimes wrongly imagined as people who only built temples and studied the stars. Caracol shows a more complicated society with farmers, traders, builders, rulers and soldiers. It also reminds us that historians can misunderstand the past when they rely on limited evidence or on accounts written by outsiders.

How did Día de los Muertos become a celebration of Mexican identity?

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is celebrated in Mexico and by Mexican communities around the world on 1 and 2 November. Families remember people who have died by visiting graves and creating ofrendas, or altars, decorated with photographs, candles, flowers, food and personal objects. The tradition has roots in Indigenous Mexican cultures, including the Aztecs, who held ceremonies honouring the dead. After the Spanish conquest, Catholic festivals called All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day influenced the timing of the celebration. Its modern appearance was also shaped by the Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada, whose skeleton pictures joked about politicians and rich people. In the United States, Mexican American artists and activists helped turn private family ceremonies into large public events during the 1970s. They used the celebration to take pride in Indigenous roots and Mexican American culture.
Why it matters: This story shows that traditions can change without disappearing. Día de los Muertos combines Indigenous beliefs, Spanish Catholic influence, modern art and political activism. It also shows how communities use celebrations to remember the past and express who they are today. A festival about death can therefore become a powerful statement about survival, family and cultural pride.

How are people in Punjab repairing the damage caused by partition?

In Punjab, northern India, villagers are rebuilding mosques that were abandoned or damaged during the partition of British India in 1947. Partition created the new countries of India and Pakistan, but it also caused terrible violence and forced millions of people to leave their homes. Many Muslims left the Indian side of Punjab, while Sikhs and Hindus moved in the opposite direction. Hundreds of village mosques were left empty, damaged or used as storage buildings. Now some Sikh and Hindu communities are helping to restore them. In one village, a Sikh woman persuaded her family to donate farmland so that a mosque could be built for the remaining Muslim families. In another village, people of different faiths contributed money, bricks and cement. The projects cannot erase the suffering of 1947, but they are helping communities recover buildings and relationships damaged by one of the largest migrations in modern history.
Why it matters: Partition is often remembered through violence, refugees and divided families. These mosque restorations show another part of the story: people choosing cooperation after conflict. Buildings can carry painful memories, but they can also become places where communities repair trust and decide that the past should not control their future.

What can one Stone Age woman tell us about people moving across Europe?

Scientists have studied the DNA of a woman who lived about 30,000 years ago and whose bones were found in a cave in southwestern France. Her genetic evidence suggests that people from eastern and western Europe were connected much earlier than researchers had believed. The woman belonged to the Gravettian culture, a Stone Age society known for hunting, portable art and small Venus figurines. Until now, scientists had thought that groups in eastern and western Europe may have lived mostly separately. The new evidence suggests that people moved across large distances during the last Ice Age and that southwestern France may have been an important meeting place. The cave where the bone was found had also been used by Neanderthals thousands of years earlier. Ancient DNA cannot tell us every detail of a person’s life, but it can reveal family links and population movements that left no written records.
Why it matters: History is often imagined as beginning with writing, but people were travelling, meeting and sharing ideas long before written records existed. This discovery challenges the idea that Stone Age communities were isolated. It also shows how new scientific evidence can change what we think we know about migration and human connections.

Why was a 3,300-year-old sword still sharp underwater?

Archaeologists have recovered a bronze sword from Lake Mezzano, a volcanic lake in central Italy. The weapon is about 3,300 years old and still has a sharp edge. It dates from the Late Bronze Age, centuries before the rise of Rome. Researchers also found vases, axes, arrowheads, daggers, spearheads, pins and a bronze razor near parts of a settlement built on wooden stilts. The sword may have belonged to a powerful warrior, but it may also have been placed in the lake as an offering to a god or spirit. Bronze Age communities sometimes threw weapons, jewellery and other valuable objects into rivers and lakes as part of religious rituals. The discovery gives archaeologists clues about people who lived in Italy before the Etruscans and Romans. It also shows that weapons were not only tools for fighting. They could be symbols of wealth, status and power.
Why it matters: A sword can tell us about warfare, technology, religion and social class at the same time. The discovery reminds us that ancient people did not always use objects in the way we expect. A weapon placed carefully in a lake may have been more important as a religious or political symbol than as something used in battle.

What can fingerprints tell us about who built China’s Terracotta Army?

China’s Terracotta Army contains about 8,000 life-sized clay figures buried near the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. The soldiers were made more than 2,000 years ago and were meant to protect the emperor in the afterlife. A new study has examined 79 fingerprints left on 36 of the figures. The researchers believe that about 45 percent of the prints came from adult women, while 22 percent came from young people under 15. This challenges the old idea that the army was made only by adult men. The evidence is not perfect. The study looked at just one of three pits, and one person may have worked on several statues. However, written records from the Qin dynasty also suggest that women and children took part in state-controlled craft work.
Why it matters: The Terracotta Army is not only a collection of soldiers. It also gives clues about how the Qin state organised work and controlled millions of people. The fingerprints suggest that women and children may have played a larger role in building the emperor’s enormous underground world than historians once believed.

Why was a Nazi-looted painting finally returned to its owners’ family?

A colourful painting by Wassily Kandinsky has been sold for about $42 million after a long fight over its ownership. Kandinsky painted Das bunte Leben, meaning The Colorful Life, in 1907. During the Second World War, Nazi forces invaded the Netherlands and the painting was taken from the collection of a Jewish family who had fled persecution. It was later sold without the family’s permission and eventually hung for decades in a German museum. In 2023, German officials decided that the painting should be returned to the family’s descendants because it had been seized as a result of Nazi persecution. After its return, the painting was put up for auction in London. The sale has brought attention to the many artworks still being traced, returned or debated because of Nazi theft.
Why it matters: This painting shows that the effects of the Holocaust did not end in 1945. Families are still trying to recover property taken by the Nazis. Returning stolen art is about money, but it is also about justice, memory and recognising what happened to people who were persecuted.

What can new tablets tell us about the lost Hittite Empire?

Archaeologists working in central Turkey have discovered 131 clay tablets written about 3,400 years ago. The tablets belonged to the Hittite Empire, a powerful kingdom that once rivalled ancient Egypt. They were found at Kayalıpınar, the site of the Hittite city of Šamuḫa, rather than at the empire’s capital. This matters because most surviving Hittite records come from royal palaces, so they mainly describe kings and officials. The new tablets give a wider view of life. They mention religious ceremonies, government work, attacks by enemy tribes and a serious outbreak of disease. Some describe a baby princess who died during an epidemic and the rituals carried out after her death. Other tablets record how priests studied the flight of birds to understand what the gods wanted. Written evidence like this allows historians to hear Hittite people speaking in their own words, rather than relying only on what Egyptians or later writers said about them. nationalgeographic.com
Why it matters: The Hittites are often less familiar than the Egyptians or Romans, even though they were one of the great powers of the ancient Near East. These tablets show that history is not only about kings and battles. They reveal illness, religion, government and family tragedy, helping bring an almost forgotten civilisation back to life.

What does a wall beneath Paris tell us about Julius Caesar?

A recently discovered wall beneath a hospital in central Paris may help explain what happened when Julius Caesar’s army attacked the Gallic settlement of Lutetia in 52 BC. Caesar described the Gauls as wild and badly organised, while presenting Roman soldiers as clever and disciplined. His account says the Parisii tribe burned their settlement and destroyed its bridges before the Roman attack. Archaeologists have now found a charred wall and building remains on the Île de la Cité, the island in the River Seine at the centre of modern Paris. The discovery supports the idea that Lutetia stood on the island, as Caesar claimed. However, it also shows that the Gauls built strong defences, had skilled metalworkers and used roads, bridges and drainage systems. The Parisii may have burned their own settlement because they realised it could not withstand Roman weapons and wanted to stop useful supplies falling into enemy hands. nationalgeographic.com
Why it matters: Caesar was not a neutral reporter. He wrote about his own wars and had good reasons to make Rome’s enemies look foolish. Archaeology can test parts of his story, while also showing where his version may be unfair or exaggerated. The discovery helps us ask who gets to tell the story of a war.

Why does America’s new national park tell an Apache story?

The United States has created its 64th national park at Chiricahua in south-eastern Arizona. The area is famous for tall rock spires formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. Native Americans call it the Land of Standing-Up Rocks. The park lies within the historic territory of the Chiricahua Apache, who lived there for centuries and resisted European settlers and the expanding United States. In 1886, Apache leaders including Geronimo and Cochise surrendered to US forces, and many Chiricahua Apache people were forcibly removed to the San Carlos Apache reservation. The area later became a national monument in 1924. The new law protects access for Apache traditional ceremonies and allows parts of the park to close temporarily for cultural reasons. The site also has links to Black soldiers known as Buffalo soldiers, who were stationed there after the American Civil War.
Why it matters: A national park may look like a place created only to protect beautiful scenery, but it can also contain evidence of conflict, forced removal and cultural survival. Chiricahua shows that public land can have several different meanings at once, especially for Indigenous peoples whose history began long before the modern United States.

Many English pubs claim to be more than 1,000 years old, but a new investigation says most of these claims are based on weak evidence or modern advertising. A buildings archaeologist working for Historic England used documents, building evidence and tree-ring dating to compare the claims. The strongest candidate is the George Inn in Norton St Philip, Somerset. Its wooden beams suggest that the building was constructed in the late 14th century, and it has been used as an inn since about 1430. Tree-ring dating works because the age of a tree can be calculated by counting its rings. Medieval carpenters usually cut timber while it was still fresh and built with it soon afterwards, so the age of the wood gives a good estimate for when a building was made. The investigation also found that no pubs are actually mentioned in the Domesday Book, despite claims made by several famous inns.
Why it matters: This story shows why historians need evidence rather than exciting stories. A date printed on a postcard or repeated in a tourist advertisement is not the same as proof. Buildings, documents and tree rings can test popular legends and sometimes replace a famous claim with a much more believable answer.

Scientists in Sheffield have recreated the strange colour-changing effect of a Roman glass cup made about 1,600 years ago. The Lycurgus Cup looks green when light shines onto it, but turns ruby red when light passes through it from behind. The cup shows a scene from Greek mythology, in which the god Dionysus defeats King Lycurgus. Researchers believe Roman glassmakers created the effect by mixing tiny particles of gold and silver into the molten glass. These particles are far smaller than a grain of sand. They change how light is absorbed and reflected, producing the two different colours. The scientists had to experiment with very high temperatures and carefully controlled conditions. Their work suggests that the Roman makers may have discovered an extremely difficult technique through skill, luck or both. The original cup is held by the British Museum, while a modern version will go on display in Sheffield.
Why it matters: The Lycurgus Cup challenges the idea that ancient technology was simple. Roman craftspeople could create objects using advanced knowledge of materials and heat, even though they did not understand atoms or light in the modern scientific sense. It also shows how historians can learn about the past by combining archaeology, science and practical experiments.

A rare manuscript called the Azcatitlan Codex has returned to Mexico for the first time since 1840. It is being displayed in Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology after being loaned by France. The codex was made in the Valley of Mexico in the late 1500s or early 1600s. Its pictures and writing describe the Mexica migration, the rulers of Tenochtitlan and the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Mexica Empire and stood where Mexico City is today. The codex combines Indigenous picture-writing traditions with European-style writing. France has held the manuscript for many years, and questions remain about who should own important Mexican historical objects kept in European collections. The temporary return is part of celebrations marking 200 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and France. Mexico has also loaned another important manuscript to France, so both countries can display parts of their shared and contested history.
Why it matters: The codex is more than an old book. It preserves an Indigenous account of migration, rulers, conquest and survival. Its return raises questions about who should care for historical objects and where they should be displayed. It also reminds us that the history of the Spanish conquest can look different depending on whose records are being read.

How did Glasgow people win back a public path from a rich landowner?

In the 1820s, a wealthy Scottish landowner called Thomas Harvie built two high stone walls across a public path beside the River Clyde. He wanted to stop people from walking through his estate. Many people in Glasgow were furious because the path had long been used to reach the river and open countryside. In 1823, local people attacked the walls with gunpowder brought by coalminers. Harvie rebuilt them with iron spikes, broken glass and small cannons, but the campaign continued. People boycotted his whisky business and took the argument to court. In 1828, the House of Lords ruled that the public had a right to use the path. Archaeologists have now found what may be the foundations of the wall, as well as a token carrying the slogan “Let Glasgow Flourish”. The discovery has brought attention back to an early fight over public access and private property.
Why it matters: This story shows that ordinary people in the Industrial Revolution did not simply accept the power of wealthy landowners. They used protests, boycotts, violence and the courts to defend access to the countryside. Arguments about who can use land and who controls public space are still important today.

What can a Viking church tell us about why Greenland’s settlers disappeared?

Archaeologists working in southern Greenland have found human remains at a site believed to be a Norse church. Norse settlers from Iceland, including followers of Erik the Red, began living in Greenland around 985 CE. Their farms and trading communities survived for hundreds of years, but the settlements disappeared during the early 15th century. Researchers had suspected that the site was a church because of its stone walls. Finding a skeleton buried with its head pointing east, in the manner of a Christian burial, has provided much stronger evidence. The church probably dates from between 1100 and 1300, when Greenland’s Norse settlers were becoming Christian. Researchers believe that wealthy landowners may have competed to control churches and the money and influence connected with them. The discovery may help explain how the colony was organised before it eventually vanished.
Why it matters: The Vikings were not only raiders. They were also farmers, traders and settlers who built communities in difficult places. Greenland’s Norse colony survived for centuries before disappearing, and historians still debate why. This church gives new evidence about religion, power and everyday life inside that lost society.

Why did people in Alberta vote to stay part of Canada?

Voters in Alberta, a wealthy province in western Canada, have rejected a proposal to begin the process of leaving Canada. About 76% supported remaining in the country, while roughly 24% backed taking the first legal steps towards a future independence vote. Alberta has long had disagreements with the federal government in Ottawa, especially over taxes, energy policy and the use of its large oil reserves. Some separatists argue that Alberta would be richer and freer as a separate country. Others worry that independence would create years of economic and political uncertainty. The vote was not itself a final decision on independence. It was a vote about whether to start a process that might eventually lead to another referendum. The result has strengthened supporters of Canadian unity, but the separatist movement says it will continue. The argument shows that countries can face serious divisions even without fighting a war.
Why it matters: Countries are not always united forever. People may share a flag and citizenship but still disagree about money, power and regional identity. Alberta’s vote can be compared with other independence movements, including Scotland, Quebec and the campaign that led to Brexit. It shows why separating from an existing country is usually a complicated political process rather than a simple choice.

Why is a disputed border making Sudan’s war even more dangerous?

A drone strike on a market near Abyei, a border region claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan, has killed at least 153 people. The attack happened during Sudan’s civil war, which began in 2023 when the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces began fighting for control of the country. Abyei has a complicated history. Sudan and South Sudan have argued over the oil-rich area since South Sudan became independent in 2011. Different communities also use the land in different ways. The Ngok Dinka population generally supports joining South Sudan, while Misseriya nomads use the area’s grazing land and favour remaining with Sudan. This means that the war is not only a struggle between two armies. It also involves local communities, land, oil and an unfinished border. Drones have made the fighting even more dangerous because attacks can reach crowded markets and transport hubs far from the front line.
Why it matters: Borders created by governments do not always match the places where people live, work or feel they belong. Abyei shows how independence can solve one problem while creating others. The region’s history, natural resources and competing communities have kept the border disputed, making it easier for a wider civil war to spread into local conflicts.

Why did a historic French city hall burn during protests?

A large fire has badly damaged the city hall of Limoges in France. The building opened in 1883 and was officially recognised as a historic monument in 1975. It was famous for its tall spire, decorated belfry and mosaics showing important people from the city’s past, including a politician linked to the French Revolution and one of Napoleon’s military commanders. French authorities say masked people entered the building during anti-government protests and deliberately started the fire. Much of the front section, roof and spire have been destroyed. Residents have compared the damage with the 2019 fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, although that fire was probably accidental. Fire crews are still checking whether the building is safe. Local leaders are asking the government for money to rebuild it, while residents are mourning a place connected with weddings, baptisms and public events for more than 140 years.
Why it matters: Historic buildings are not only made of stone and wood. They can also represent local pride, public life and shared memories. The Limoges fire shows how quickly political anger can damage objects and places that belong to everyone. It also raises a difficult question: can rebuilding a building restore what people felt about it?

How did a Scottish doctor help create Sherlock Holmes?

Sherlock Holmes was a fictional detective, but his unusual way of solving crimes was inspired by a real Scottish doctor called Joseph Bell. Bell worked as a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in the late 1800s. He trained students to notice tiny details in a person’s clothes, shoes, movements and speech. From these clues, he could make surprisingly accurate guesses about their lives. One of the students watching him was Arthur Conan Doyle, who later became the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Doyle used Bell’s powers of observation as a model for Holmes, who first appeared in print in 1887. Bell also helped police investigate real crimes and became involved in the early development of forensic science. A new book about his life has brought attention to the doctor who inspired one of the most famous detectives in the world.
Why it matters: Famous fictional characters often grow out of real people and real historical settings. Sherlock Holmes reflects Victorian interest in science, medicine, crime and careful observation. The story also shows how one teacher’s methods influenced a writer and then shaped films, television and detective stories for more than a century.

Why are people still searching for Amelia Earhart’s missing plane?

A new expedition has failed to find Amelia Earhart’s missing aeroplane, but the search has brought her story back into the news. Earhart was one of the world’s most famous pilots. In 1937, she attempted to fly around the world with navigator Fred Noonan. Their Lockheed Electra disappeared over the Pacific Ocean, and neither person was found. Researchers recently thought they had spotted the shape of the plane beneath the water near Nikumaroro, a remote island belonging to Kiribati. A team from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute travelled there to investigate. Using sonar and equipment designed to detect metal, they discovered that the object was not an aircraft. It was probably a mass of coral sand and other underwater debris. The mystery remains unsolved. Other researchers still believe the plane may have crashed at sea, while some think Earhart and Noonan reached an island and survived for a time.
